INFORMATIONS
My name is Davide Baro, but called Deiv by all people,
and i live in Italy at begin of the Alps in a small village called
Andorno Micca where i have my workshop.
I began my adventure in bagpipes studying Scottish highland bagpipe,
and after a years my curiosity reach me to research a traditional
bagpipe from my land. So interest for my tradition give me a opportunity
to began to build a traditional bagpipe of Piedmont.
With help of Sergio Verna, now Hurdy Gurdy and string instruments
maker, i began to build my first instruments. With years, i improve
the stability and the quality of my intruments as musician, and as
bagpipe maker, searching the best materials and improving the productive
standard of my instruments. Now are 8 years that my profession are
bagpipe maker and musician.
In my bagpipes i use the Elsbeere Wood (Sorbus Family) of first choice,
and first choice ebony for the "Fifre". Sometimes, and under
request, i use also Ebony or Boxwood (if i found good quality) on
my bagpipes.
For Elbsere Wood i make deep oil treatment so the wood with time don't
warp and don't crack.
Boring, reaming and lathe working are made by hand using the best
tools giving a great attention to all work process for give to all
my instruments a very high standard and the best quality. Tone holes
on chanter are made it with automizzed digital control for have high
standard with all instruments. The quality of the material of all
bagpipe parts are studied and tested from the smallest details for
have a really reliable and stable instrument.
I don't use CNC lathe, i don't have a mass productions and my philosophy
in making bagpipe are "individually handcrafted".
The instruments that now I'm building are the Piva Piemontese (traditional
bagpipe from north Italy), Medieval Bagpipe, Bombard e Fifre (flute).

The "Piva Piemontese" is a traditional
instrument who was used in Piedmont (north west Italy region)
from the begin of the XVIII century and it is a evolution of
the "Piva dell'Appennino".
From the XIX century, the Piva know a deep crisis in her use
for introduction of more stable and tuned instrument (accordeon
and similar intrument) so it went near to extinction.
We don't find any exemplary from the past, so the diatribe for
the existence of this instrument in the past and if it's a traditional
instrument is permissible.
I can say, from my research, that there are a lot of probability
that this instrument was existed in the past; a lot of traditional
songs speak about this Bagpipe, there are lot of representation
in inscription and painting (ex. Graneri e Olivero - XVIII sec.),
all the traditional music from Piedmont are playable with this
instrument, etc.
The model that i build are similar and has the almost measure
of the "Piva dell'Appennino" (little bit different
for the modern pitch at 440 mhz). The drones are tuned in G
in octave, the chanter has a good volume for play with accordeon,
hurdy gurdy and similar instrument; the chanter are tuned in
G major, but is possible play also in minor due to the chromatism
on this chanter. The reeds that i use on this instrument are
in plastic.

I don't know with scientific precision if this instrument
is existed in the past, but I know that today there is a "Piva"
in Piedmont.

The Medieval Piva is an instrument that
can be dated near to the XV / XVI century, due to the open bell
very large and the tonality that are A minor. This bagpipe is
a reconstruction that i made from the medieval iconography.
The conical boring on chanter and cilindrical boring on drones
coming from my "inspiration" for have a very loud
and stable bagpipe. The drones are in octave in A, the chanter
are tuned in A minor.
This instrument are not traditional but is a reconstruction
of medieval bagpipe that i made following my "inspiration"
for have a Good Modern Medieval Piva.

The Rauschpfeifen in G Major / A minor
that i make have the caps, so is more simple to play and to maintain
due to the plastic reeds that use.
The conical bore that i use in this instrument are the same used
in traditional "Pifferro delle Quattro Provincie", so
the sound are really similar. The Rauschpfeifen in G Major / A
minor is a instrument that can remember the Piffero but is completely
different and with different technique, so also here we can't
speak about a traditional instrument but about a reconstruction
of new instrument always following my best "inspiration".

The FIFRE flute that i make is traditional
from the South of France and some areas in Piedmont.
Traditionally used in military range in the Napoleonic age, the model
that i build is a evolution that had from military to popular instrument.
The first octave are playable with open fingering, the second octave
are playable with half close fingering like in the past.
The instrument now have a little bit different measure on cylindrical
bore for have a perfect and modern pitch. The flute are tuned in D
and usually I made it in ebony or in boxwood.

Finally i want inform you that i play in a band called Barbarian
Pipe Band, so i can give you the guarantee that the instrument
that i made are for intensive and professional use.
If you need for other informations, clarifications, etc. don't hesitate
to write or call me.
