The Hümmelchen plays in the primary key of C (with a range of C4 - D5). It uses an easy-to-understand open German fingering system. Baroque fingering is also available upon request. The chromatic chanter version allows you to easily play accidentals and semitones, making the chanter extremely versatile.

The instrument is tuned to A = 440 Hz (modern standard). Thanks to its moderate volume, it pairs perfectly in acoustic ensembles alongside chamber instruments such as flutes, violins, guitars, lutes, hurdy-gurdies, and light percussion.

Tuning is adjusted by lengthening or shortening the telescopic drone sections: pulling out lowers the pitch (flatter), pushing in raises it (sharper). Tune the tenor drone to the chanter's C (or D). Hemp/thread wrappings on the joints should slide with smooth friction and no wobble to prevent air leaks.

To preserve the wood's stability over time, it is recommended to oil the internal bore of the drones and chanter 1 or 2 times a year using **pure sweet almond oil**. Always dry off internal condensation after use. Never use alcohol or solvents, as they will ruin the hand-applied shellac finish.

It is always recommended to detach the blowpipe from the stock to let moisture evaporate and prevent condensation from pooling in wooden joints. Allow the instrument to dry at room temperature before storing it in its case.

As with all wooden instruments, sudden thermal shocks must be avoided. Cold weather makes the pitch flat, while heat makes it sharp. Before adjusting the drone tuning, play for 5 minutes so that airflow stabilizes the internal wood temperature. Never expose the instrument to direct heat sources (radiators, hot summer sun) and never use hairdryers to dry it.

The chanter is the most delicate part of the instrument. When inserting or removing it from the bag stock, grip **exclusively on the wooden bulb/mount** near the joint. Never apply levering force or twist the middle section of the stem to prevent cracking.

If joint wrappings lose thickness with use, simply wind a few additional turns of the provided synthetic thread around the joint. For the leather bag, if it loses airtightness over time, we supply a dedicated seasoning formula to restore its perfect seal.
